Genealogy Ideas and Links Just for KIDS

I am the coordinator for the Mason County Genweb Genealogy site online. USGENWEB is a project that links every county in every state together to promote the free accessiblity of resources to aid genealogists in their efforts.

I am putting up a page that will describe how your class can assist in building the Mason County site for online genealogy research. I am aware that many classes take part in family interviews, and putting together family stories for genealogy projects in schools. I'd like to see that information preserved for future reference and also to maybe spark some additional interests in your students towards genealogy and history.

I am also building a photo album online and am collecting pictures and scans of local one room schools and stories about what it was like as a student attending those schools. This presents a perfect opportunity for students to interview Grandparents and preserve family history.

What can YOU Do to contribute research, stories, photographs to the Mason County GENKID Project?

  • 1] Interview your parents, grandparents or anyone else who may be able to give you insight into living and working in a different era.

  • 2] Trace your family tree.

  • 3] Write a family Biography [story] When did they come to Mason County, from where? was the trip hard? what did they do to make a living?

  • 4] Type Obituaries, weddings, births, newspaper articles, and other information that can be uploaded to the site to aid other researchers.

  • 5] Find out the history of the house you are living in, who owned it before? did they have children, pets, what did they do for a living? Can you trace it back to the time it was built. Can you find someone who is still living that grew up in your house?

  • 6] Find photographs of your home, grandparents, maybe you dad and mom when they were your age. Send a scan of the photo to be put up in the Mason County Photo Album. Look for interesting pictures of people in activities, riding in a model T [car] on a horse, playing with toys or playing games like baseball.
